“Respect My Crown: The Rise of African American Women in Politics” is a documentary that tells the story of Black women in the state of California that have battled race and gender barriers in pursuit of equality and political power, for the past 170 years. The film reveals the sacrifices and contributions these women made to become leading voices in politics, community activism, organized labor, and the judicial system.
The title is derived from CA-SB 188, The Crown Act, a statewide law that has been passed in 18 states, which prohibits discrimination based on natural hairstyles. California has sent more women of color to the United States Congress than any other state. RESPECT MY CROWN intends to show the role of intersectionality in politics and public service in the state of California.
Join the Alexander Family Foundation, the Young Women's Empowerment Foundation, and the Black Elected Officials of California for an educational screening of the documentary Respect My Crown: The Rise of AfricanAmerican Women in California Politics. We are excited to share this powerful documentary with your community and appreciate your support in amplifying the stories of Black women in California politics. Following the screening, there will be a moderated panel discussion with director/producer Pamela Moon and esteemed guests.
